Quality Premium Program Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Questions and Answers
Q. My grade sheet shows my beans had a 19.4% oil and 34.2% protein. Why did I not receive a premium?
A. The beans must have a minimum of 18.5% oil AND 34.4% protein for any premium to be paid.
Q. How do I raise soybeans with high oil and protein?
A. The best tool is through variety selection. Soybeans which have the genetics for high oil and protein will consistently have higher oil and protein than other beans, regardless of the environment.
Q. Where do I find information on oil and protein content in soybean varieties?
A. MNSP has a published list of preferred and guaranteed varieties that are available by contacting MNSP. University of Minnesota also has a list of Variety Trials available at www.soybeans.umn.edu. Your seed dealers can also furnish you with seed catalogs. In response to this and other programs, the seed catalogs now feature oil and protein characteristics.
NOTE: When choosing seed stock, the variety's published protein and oil values must be adjusted to a 13% moisture basis.
Formula to adjust from DM protein and oil readings to 13 % moisture values:
(87 / 100) * DM protein = protein at 13% moisture
(87 / 100) * DM oil = oil at 13% moisture
Q. Will top dressing of foliar fertilization help raise the protein level?
A. There is no data found supporting this procedure.
Q. If my soybeans test very low in oil and/or protein will my price per bushel be discounted?
A. No, it is only a premium scale, not a discount scale.
