Work Still on Target

Old Man Winter Smiles on Brewster Project!

"Wow! What a winter!"

That's the observation of John Prohaska, engineering coordinator at the new MnSP plant at Brewster, who's cautiously optimistic that construction will stay on schedule and the complex will be complete by Fall 2003.

"The nice weather has allowed construction to progress on schedule," he reports. "Cold weather slowed the work down a little, but we are still on target," he adds.

Prohaska said rough grading has been completed and concrete foundations are nearly finished. Steel girders have been arriving at the Brewster site over the past two

weeks, and Prohaska expects erection of the steel buildings to begin early in February.

He said Crown extraction machinery is beginning to arrive on the job site, with three sections of the dryer cooler already on the premises.

The slip form which will be used to build the meal silos is being prepared and is nearly ready for the con-tinuous pour project. Erection of steel bins for bean re-ceiving is scheduled to begin by the time MNSP mem-bers read this newsletter, he predicts.

And the Brewster skyline is taking a new shape, too: Three towers for holding receiving conveyors have been erected and the receiving bucket elevator legs are on-site.

Boiler room equipment has been ordered, and is scheduled to arrive in June.

Annual Meeting is Set; Nominating Petitions Due

The MNSP Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, March 15, 2003, at the Windom Community Center. One order of business will be the election of directors. There will be one open seat for a three-year term in each district. If you are interested in running for director, call (605) 627-6100 to request a nomination petition. If nominees wish to have their names listed in the annual meeting notification letter mailed to all stockholders in mid-February, the petition will need to be received back in the office by Tuesday, Feb. 11.

MnSP Adopts Value-Based Pricing Plan

The concept of paying for soybeans based on oil and protein content has been talked about for years. Until recently the feasibility of testing each load and paying producers for the true value of their soybeans has been difficult. With advances in the speed and accuracy of infrared measurement equipment along with a reduc-tion in cost of these machines, the door is now open to explore new pricing programs.

The Minnesota Soybean Processors in cooperation with the South Dakota Soybean Processors has elected to implement a value based pricing program for soy-beans delivered to Brewster when the plant opens next fall. The program mirrors the Quality Premium Program currently being offered by South Dakota Soybean Pro-cessors at Volga.

The Quality Premium Program pays producers cash premiums for soybeans that grade high in oil and pro-tein content. After meeting established minimums for both oil and protein, producers can earn a premium based upon an established scale. Details of the program, including premium scale, will be released over the next few months.

The directors and management of MNSP realize that
premiums paid cannot offset a loss in yield. Producers are encouraged to select varieties for oil and protein only after they have met satisfactory yield and agronomic requirements. For more information on oil and protein content in soybeans check out the University of Minnesota's website at www.soybeans.umn.edu or con-tact your seed dealer.
